Cape Henry Audubon Society presents John Arnold

Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, downtown Norfolk at 7:30 pm

All most welcome.

Speaker: John Arnold is a native of South Alabama, and graduated in 2012 from Auburn University with a B.S. degree in Wildlife Science. John worked at the Southeastern Raptor Center while attending Auburn, which gave him the opportunity to work with eagles, hawks, owls, and even a Lanner Falcon. This is where he developed a huge interest in avian species. He is currently a MS candidate at Old Dominion University, and Dr. Eric L. Walters is his advisor. He plans to continue conducting avian research and eventually obtain a PhD.

Program: Stopover Habitat Use by Migratory Birds along the Delmarva Peninsula. The study is assessing stopover habitat use by migratory birds along the Delmarva Peninsula during fall migration. This project is part of a collaboration with the University of Delaware, where Radar Ecologist Dr. Jeff Buler has used NEXRAD radar data to identify important stopover sites, as well as develop predictive models of use for sites not covered by the radars. Partners include NASA, The Nature Conservancy, Maryland DNR, Virginia DEQ, and USFWS. John, along with an experienced field crew, have been going out to validate these models through ground surveying. They are also looking at what may be attracting these birds to specific sites, such as habitat composition and food availability. Their surveying and sampling will be used to verify the importance of these stopover areas during fall migration, and will ultimately help in prioritizing conservation efforts of lands along the Delmarva Peninsula
