Different types of plasma sources for the generation of atmospheric-pressure plasmas and their application in biomedical fields are reviewed. Particular attention will be paid to pencil or needle-like plasma plumes, generated with nanosecond pulsed plasma sources. The observed plasma-mediated germicidal effects against microbial biofilms imply promising applications of the cold plasma for root canal and wound disinfection. Possible plasma bactericidal mechanisms including oxidation with reactive chemical species (O, O<sub>3</sub>, OH, etc.), UV radiation, and heating are discussed.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Bio:</p> <p> Chunqi Jiang received the Ph.D. degree from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA, in 2002. Dr. Jiang currently is an Associate Professor affiliated with the Center for Bioelectrics and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at ODU.&nbsp; Prior to her rejoining ODU, she worked in a R&amp;D startup company in New Jersey for couple of years, then started her academic venture as a research faculty at the Department of Electrical Engineering-Electrophysics of the University of Southern California since 2008. Her research interests include atmospheric-pressure plasmas for biomedical and environmental applications, high voltage, high power plasma switches, and the related fundamental plasma research. She has served as a technical program committee member, an overseas attendance chair, short course chair for IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conferences, and a guest editor for the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation. She became an IEEE senior member in 2009.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p>
