4/19 Colloquium- Thinkers and Their Scientific Surroundings

Please make plans to attend The College of Arts & Letters Colloquium Friday April 19, 2013 at 3:00 pm in BAL 9024

Thinkers and Their Scientific Surroundings presented by Dr. Susan Sterrett

How important is it to understanding an author's writings that we understand the science and technology in the cultural context in which it was written? Many will agree that it is important to understand a scientific work in its scientific context, and a philosophical work in its philosophical context. It is sometimes also important, I argue, to understand the science and technology of the day in order to understand a key point in a philosophical work. I illustrate with examples from nineteenth and early twentieth century science and technology.
