Many will agree that it is important to understand a scientific work in its scientific context, and a philosophical work in its philosophical context. It is sometimes also important, I argue, to understand the science and technology of the day in order to understand a key point in a philosophical work. I illustrate with examples from nineteenth and early twentieth century science and technology. </p>
