ECE Graduate Seminar

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department cordially invites you to attend the following seminar:

Plasma Processing of SRF Accelerator Cavities

By

Dr. Svetozar Popovic

Department of Physics, Center for Accelerator Science

Old Dominion University

Host: Dr. Filip Cuckov

Friday, March 22, 2013

3:00 p.m. KH 224

Motivation for this talk is to provide insight into the rich phenomenology of plasma processing of the accelerator cavity walls, which has received a renewed attention in the context of the development of compact light sources that require a new generation of compact superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) accelerators. These accelerators may incorporate SRF cavities of complex shapes in order to satisfy stricter requirements for beam dynamics. The study is focused on the behavior of contaminated superconductor surface and the plasma processing methods, still in development, of removal of organic dielectric, and conductor layers. It will also address the consequences of plasma processing on secondary electron emission (SEE) and the multipactor effect, which is one of the major adverse factors in SRF accelerator performance. In situ cleaning of used SRF cavities and the approach to measurements of SEE from thin superconductive films are described as practical tasks. Efforts in the automation of the optical diagnostic techniques will be presented. Fundamental problems of the low-energy electron impact and zero-energy limit for SEE, related to the multipactor discharge will be discussed. The use of plasma processes in semiconductor industry and nanotechnology research will be compared to the processing of accelerator cavities.
