ECE Graduate Seminar

You are cordially invited to attend the following seminar:

Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Old Dominion University

  GRADUATE SEMINAR

Creative Design for Dummies

By

Dr. Gene Hou

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Old Dominion University

Friday, November 22, 2013

3:00 p.m. KH 224

Host: Dr. Oscar González

We, as engineers, are dummies. We live in a structured, formulated, theorized and verified world, a virtual world.

Can we then be creative like an artist, a musician and a fiction writer?

                What is creativity?

Can we measure creativity as voltage or temperature?

Is there a structured formula, a proved theory or a lab manual that we can follow to

                               become creative?

How can we generate a creative design?

My colleagues, Jennifer Michaeli of MET and Xiaoxiao Hu of Psychology, and I have recently been looking for the answers of these questions. We think that we may have found the holy grail of creative design for engineers. In this seminar, I would like to take you in a journey into this wonderful world of design creativity. This presentation only represents a beginning. You could be the chosen one who can help us to complete the story.

The following terms will be discussed in the seminar. It may be beneficial for you to google them beforehand.

AHP: Analytic Hierarchy Process

( Thomas Saaty, developed in early 70’s)

TRIZ: The theory of inventive problem solving

                (Genrich Altshuller, developed between 1946-85)

  ASIT: Advanced Systematic Inventive Thinking

                (Roni Horowitz, developed since 1999)

The C-K theory: The Concept-Knowledge Theory

(Reich, Y., et al, 2012, J. of Engineering Education)

  CEDA: Creative Engineering Design Assessment

( Christine Charyton, et al, 2011, J. of Engineering Education)

Bio:

Dr. Gene Hou joined Old Dominion University right after graduation from University of Iowa in 1983 with a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering and was promoted to the rank of full professor in August 1996. Dr. Hou’s research area is computational mechanics, multibody dynamics, system design and integration, uncertainty and risk management, emphasizing on multidisciplinary design optimization.
