Participants in this past CLT’s Faculty Summer Institute on Teaching and Learning asked for more information about several topics, so the Connect with Colleagues series, this season, offers a closer look at Institute topics.

One of the best-attended workshops at Summer Institute was the one on Diversity. In the upcoming Connect with Colleagues presentation, two of the panelists will jointly address the topic “Uncomfortable in the Classroom: A Conversation on Diversity, Equity, and Pedagogy.”

Drs. Kidd and Toussaint report that the next Connect with Colleagues presentation will be a very interactive session that will address three questions:

1) Why do we need to have this conversation?
2) Why is it so uncomfortable? and
3) How can we talk about diversity in our classrooms?

Participants at this Connect with Colleagues presentation should plan to actively engage in lively dialogue and challenging activities designed to provoke meaningful reflection and conversation. We will consider own biases and explore our understanding of societal structures. In short, we’ll get uncomfortable together.

Jennifer Kidd, Ph.D. is a lecturer at Old Dominion University in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Her research interests include learner-generated content, Web 2.0 applications, and peer-assessment. She is currently engaged in an interdepartmental collaboration to improve pre-service teachers' cultural competence and writing skills via writing and sharing activities in a cross-course WordPress blog as part of Old Dominion University's Quality Enhancement Plan, Improving Disciplinary Writing.

Jeff Toussaint, Ph.D. is currently a joint lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice and the Department of African and African American Studies. His areas of interest include Race and Ethnic Relations and the Sociology of Education. He teaches courses on Social Inequality, Sociological Theory, Sociology of Education, and Social Movements in Africa. He, too, is currently engaged in an interdepartmental collaboration to improve pre-service teachers' cultural competence and writing skills via writing and sharing activities in a cross-course WordPress blog as part of Old Dominion University's Quality Enhancement Plan, Improving Disciplinary Writing.

Please come join us for this discussion about diversity in our classrooms. Bring your colleagues!
