<p> You are cordially invited to attend the following seminar:</p> <p> &nbsp;In-Vivo Electrical Neural Sensing and</p> <p> Recent Approaches for Optical Sensing in the Brain</p> <p> &nbsp;by</p> <p> Dr. Hargsoon Yoon</p> <p> Department of Engineering</p> <p> Norfolk State University</p> <p> Friday, November 11, 2013</p> <p> 3:00 p.m. KH 224</p> <p> Host:&nbsp; Dr. Dean Krusienski</p> <p> Neural sensing and functional imaging technologies provided unprecedented opportunities to observe the neural activity and find functional relationship of activity in multiple brain regions. Recent progresses significantly increased fundamental understanding of underlying mechanisms in neuroscience and produced an enormous impact on finding cures and treatment technologies for neurological disorders and diseases. Despite rapid progress and success in assessing the living brain function, obtaining fuller understanding of neural cells and subcomponents of neuro-circuitry and their place in functional networks in the brain is hampered due to the lack of resolution provided by functional imaging technologies and limitations in current neural sensing technologies. In this presentation, in-vivo electrical neural sensing research will be presented for recording of electrical potentials and neurotransmitters and current issues of chronic neural sensing in the brain will be discussed. In addition, this presentation will introduce combined approaches to improve the range of observation and resolve activities and their relation in the brain from individual cells to system levels. Also, recent research efforts to develop a highly performing optical sensing system by integrating nanotechnology with optical sensing principles will be presented.</p> <p> Bio:</p> <p> Dr. Hargsoon Yoon earned his Ph.D. degree in Engineering Science from Pennsylvania State University in 2003. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from Yonsei University, South Korea. Dr. Yoon also worked at Hynix Semiconductor Co. as a senior research engineer for system integrated circuit device development for seven years. After working as a post-doc at Pennsylvania State University and a research associate professor at University of Arkansas, he joined the Department of Engineering at the Norfolk State University in 2010 as an associate professor.</p> <p> Dr. Yoon has developed nanotechnology-based neural sensors for biomedical and engineering applications. His recent research interest is focused on the development of hybrid electronic and optical sensing systems for in-vivo neural sensing in the brain. He serves as an Associate Editor of a Journal, Smart Nanosystems in Engineering and Medicine, and a program committee of SPIE international conference for Nano-, Bio-, Info-Tech Sensors and Systems. Dr. Yoon is also a member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and SPIE International Society.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p>
