ECE Seminar on Friday: Dr. R. Allen

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department cordially invite the campus community to attend its weekly graduate seminar:

Dr. Raymond Allen
Naval Research Laboratory

Friday, December 07, 2012
3:00 p.m. Kaufman Hall Rm. 224

Title: An Introduction to Pulsed Power Science and Technology at the Naval Research Laboratory

Abstract:
The Pulsed Power Physics Branch at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC has been a leader in the field of Pulsed Power for decades. This talk will introduce the various techniques used in the Gamble II and Mercury facilities to generate terawatt power pulses for tens of nanoseconds. New techniques such as plasma-opening switch drivers, LTD (linear transformer driver), and railguns will also be introduced. Finally, computational methods used to model these devices such as PIC (particle-in-cell) and transmission-line circuit codes will be described.

Dr. Raymond Allen is currently the Senior Pulsed Power Engineer in the Pulsed Power Physics Branch of the Plasma Physics Division of the Naval Research Laboratory after working there for over 12 years. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Old Dominion University in 1998. He also received his Masters of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees from ODU in 1994 and 1992, respectively. Dr. Allen has been a member of IEEE for 20 years. He became a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society while at ODU as is also a member of the American Physical Society.
