Students often seek out relationships with others that have seemingly similar cultural experiences. These relationships for racial and ethnic minorities can be called into question by the dominant culture, who might neglect to highlight they participate in similar relationship building techniques. An awareness and appreciation of how we, as human beings, choose to connect can be healing. Gaining a skillset to successfully navigate diverse relationships is a life-long asset that promotes wellness and aids in student retention.

Moderator

Dr. JaNae' Taylor - Office of Counseling Services

Faculty and Staff Panelists

Dr. Robert Perkins, Chair – Department of Sociology - Norfolk State University
Dr. Jeffery Toussaint - Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice – Old Dominion University

Mr. Andrew Jatau - Office of Counseling Services – Old Dominion University

Student Panelists

Christina Kanu - Senior English Major; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc

Sarah Bouazzaoui – Graduate Student in Economics, Global Ambassador

Melissa Rodriguez – Graduate Student in International Studies

SPONSORED BY: Office of Counseling, Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, and ODU-National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice
