from 12:30-1:30 in the Learning Commons Conference Room at Perry Library.

Osborne, an Associate Professor of Educational Foundations and Leadership, has been teaching Statistics and Research Methods to what he calls “unwilling students” for approximately twenty years. He has used a modified version of mastery learning and reports strong results (within a 95% confidence interval).

He publishes on best practices in Statistics and Research Methods, and studies academic self-concept and motivation to succeed in school.

In addition, he is a second-degree black belt in Songahm Taekwondo and a father of three.

In his Conversation, Osborne will consider the nearly-hundred years of research on student achievement, motivation, engagement, and resiliency. He will note that, while some in education focus on making learning “fun”, research and experience show that empowering students in the classroom is the surest path to long-term positive student outcomes, both in K-12 and in higher education. He will share examples of the implementation of mastery learning in both undergraduate and graduate level courses.

For more information about the Provost’s Conversations on Teaching and Learning series, including highlights from past years’ Conversations and a calendar of upcoming Conversation dates, visit the Conversations’ website at http://clt.odu.edu/pctl.
