Virtual Documentary Screening and Panel to Explore Significant Jewish Cultural Site

Old Dominion University's Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding, along with national partners, will host a virtual panel discussion and early screening of a documentary about a noted Jewish historical site on Nov. 1.

Although the full documentary, "The Secrets of the Great Synagogue of Vilna" will not be released until September 2021, IJIU and partners will provide early online access to an online screening, followed by the panel discussion with leaders of the excavation of the synagogue. After registering, a link will be provided to watch an exclusive preview of the film documentary prior to the 4 p.m. online discussion.

The documentary shows the archaeological journey to uncover one of the oldest and most significant religious and cultural sites of Eastern European Jewish life. The Great Synagogue of Vilna, the spiritual and physical home of the Lithuanian Jews was ransacked during WWII and destroyed by the Soviets in 1956. The film chronicles the process to uncover, document and now preserve the remains of this synagogue, which has been ongoing since 2015.

"This virtual event will give participants a rare glimpse into how important sites like this are recovered, taking them on an interesting historical and visual journey and culminating with the opportunity to hear first-hand from the archaeologists," said Amy Milligan, Batten Endowed Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies and Women's Studies and director of the Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding. "Not only is this project of importance for Jewish history, but it also speaks universally to how legacy and memory are recovered and preserved."
