The UN speaker who set out the most wide ranging vision countering Mr Trump's came from another quarter. Wang Yi, Beijing's foreign minister, set out a full-throated defence of the rules-based international order, much as President Xi Jinping did at Davos after Mr Trump's inauguration. Speaking at the Security Council, Mr Wang hailed the Iran deal Mr Trump has often denounced and declared that the goal of the gathering in New York was to "uphold multilateralism, safeguard the Charter of the UN, and uphold the norms governing international relations".
