PEACEKEEPING: ‘At least 12 U.N. Peacekeepers are killed in Congo’, New York Times, 8 December 2017
The UN said at least 12 peacekeepers from Tanzania were killed in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in one of the deadliest assaults on the organization's forces. Five Congolese soldiers also died and at least 40 others were injured in the attack on a UN base in North Kivu, the UN said in a statement. The UN attributed the attack to an Islamist militant group known as the Allied Democratic Forces, which has its origins in neighboring Uganda and is accused of killing hundreds of people over the past three years.
