CYPRUS: ‘Cyprus deal close but don't expect miracles, says UN chief’, Guardian, 12 January 2017
Talks to resolve the division of Cyprus are close to a settlement, the UN secretary general, António Guterres, has said, but he cautioned against expectations of a miracle. Progress has been described as fast, but not so dramatic that it would warrant the attendance on Friday of the leaders of Cyprus' guarantor countries - Greece, Turkey and former colonial power the UK - at the talks in Geneva. Instead it is likely that further detailed work will be undertaken by officials before the political process recommences in a few weeks.
