Celebrate National Poetry Month with Luisa Igloria and Renée Olander. ODU Virginia Beach brings together two distinguished local authors reading from their newest works.
Luisa A. Igloria was the inaugural Glasgow Distinguished Writer in Residence at Washington and Lee University (2018) and winner of 2015 Resurgence Prize (U.K.), the world's first major award for econpoetry, selected by former UK poet laureate Sir Andrew Motion, Alice Oswald, and Jo Shapcott. Former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey selected her chapbook What is Left of Wings, I Ask as the 2018 recipient of the Center for the Book Arts Letterpress Poetry Chapbook award. Other works include The Buddha Wonders if She is Having a Mid-Life Crisis (Phoenicia Publishing, Montreal, 2018), Ode to the Heart Smaller than a Pencil Eraser (2014 May Swenson Prize, Utah State University Press), Juan Luna's Revolver (2009 Ernest Sandeen Prize, University of Notre Dame Press), and 11 other books. She teaches on the faculty of the MFA Creative Writing Program at Old Dominion University, which she directed from 2009-2015. www.luisaigloria.com
Renée Olander is author of American Dangerous and A Few Spells. Her poems have appeared in the Split This Rock Poem of the Week, Heart Online and The Chronicle of Higher Education Poetry Month blogs, and in the anthologies Forgotten Women, Hawai'i Pacific Review Best of the Decade 1997-2007, Verse and Universe: Poems About Science and Mathematics, and many other publications. Olander's essays, reviews, and interviews with writers have appeared in The Writer's Chronicle, The Virginian-Pilot, and The Tulsa Review of Women's Literature, and her work is forthcoming in Feminine Rising: Voices of Power and Invisibility. Her memoir Antartica in the House was a finalist for the Arcadia's Press's 2016 Dead Bison Editor's Prize in Nonfiction, and she is recipient of the Kate Smith Award for Poetry from Amelia Magazine.
