Description
Join the Institute for Ethics and Public Affairs in welcoming guest speaker Dr. Alo Basu, Associate Professor from College of the Holy Cross, who will be giving a talk on “The Trouble with Bathroom Bills: Natural Variation in the Biology of Sex.” The biology of sex, including embryonic development, anatomy, physiology, and behavior, is highly variable in animals. Humans are no exception. A study of the biology of sex reveals continuous variation and exceptions that challenge the concept of sex as a fixed, binary dichotomy. As such, outward expression of this natural variation is expected in a free society. Attempts to legislate absolute, binary gender on the basis of biological sex characteristics allude to scientific grounding but are in fact at odds with current scientific understandings of sex. This makes these bathroom bills inherently unethical.
