- Quebecois poets Carole David, Denise Brassard and Paul Chanel Malenfant, along with translator Peter Schulman, will offer poems and poems in French and intranslation, and invite conversation with the audience. Poet, novelist and short story writer Carole David has a Ph.D. in French studies. She is very involved in the literary community; she was chair of the Public Lending Right Commission (2004–06) and of the Maison de la poésie de Montréal (2006–10). Since 2012 she has chaired the literature committee of the Conseil des arts de Montréal. Her most recent collection of poetry, “Manuel de poétique à l’intention des jeunes filles,” was awarded the Prix Alain-Grandbois and was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award. A writer, critic and professor at the Université du Québec à Rimouski, Paul Chanel Malenfant has published more than 15 collections of poetry and two novels, as well as a book and numerous articles on poetry. His work has received several awards. “If This Were Death” is a translation of his Governor General’s Award-winning collection, “Des ombres portées” (Noroît, 2000). “Fleuves” (Noroît, 1997) won the Prix Alain-Grandbois of the Académie des Lettres du Québec and the Grand Prix of the Festival International de la Poésie.
