Description
Four-time Grammy Award-winning master percussionist and composer Glen Velez, the founding father of the modern frame drum movement, is often regarded as a legendary figure among musicians and audiences worldwide. Velez brought a new genre of drumming to the contemporary music scene by creating his own performance style inspired by years of percussion and frame drumming studies from various cultures. His “Ta Ka Di Mi” Duo with virtuoso rhythm vocalist Loire Cotler has garnered critical and audience acclaim around the world. Loire Cotler’s unusual artistry creates a synthesis of world styling of jazz scat, pop and melismatic improvisations, along with her original reworking of the highly sophisticated and rare vocal art of Konnakol. Cotler’s expansion into Konnakol is just the latest manifestation of her long-standing devotion to the possibility of singing wordless, vocal articulations and rhythmic play. She attributes much of her rhythmic approach to her collaboration with Velez (2002–present). Tickets can be purchased online at oduartstix.com, or by calling (757) 683-5305 during regular box office hours.
