Dear Colleague:

With sadness, I write to inform you that Lt. Col. Brian D. Kerns, professor of military science and commanding officer of Old Dominion University's Army ROTC unit since 2011, died yesterday.

For more than three years, Brian was a valued member of our community, fostering a close relationship between the Army ROTC and Old Dominion. His work in developing future army officers of the "Monarch Battalion" set a standard of excellence that was recognized nationally.

Brian's military career began in August of 1992 when he received his commission as a second lieutenant from The Citadel.

A native of Virginia, he earned his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from The Citadel and a master's degree in military history from the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He had a distinguished career serving in increasingly challenging assignments in support of Army operations, including Operation Uphold Democracy, Operation Desert Thunder, SFOR Bosnia and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Brian's military awards included the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Combat Action Badge.

Brian was 43. He is survived by his wife Lisa and son Ethan, 3.

In recognition of Brian's service and sacrifice, ODU flags have been lowered to half-staff through Thursday, Sept. 9, at all University locations.

Plans for a funeral are in progress. In addition, a memorial service will be held on campus and details will be announced at a future date. Please keep Lt. Col. Brian D. Kerns' family in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

John R. Broderick
President
