Letter from President Broderick on El Paso and Dayton

Dear Monarch Community:

It is heartbreaking, that once again, dozens of lives—mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers—have been taken senselessly by hate and gun violence.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the friends and families who lost their loved ones in separate mass shootings in El Paso, Texas on Saturday and Dayton, Ohio early this morning.

I know several university colleagues have had research relationships at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, while a number of us, through Conference USA, have friendships at University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). I have sent a note of condolences from our community to Dr. Diana Natalicio, president of UTEP.

Our thoughts as well go out to the valiant and selfless first responders who have protected and assisted victims on scene at far too many mass killings in our country this year, which have claimed over 120 lives.

These incidents are stark reminders of the fragility of life. As a Monarch community, let our daily actions be the ones that shatter hate—care for our neighbors, lend a hand to those in need and foster an environment of inclusion where differences are welcomed and cherished.

Sincerely,

John R. Broderick
President
