John Keeling, Former Strome College of Business Senior Lecturer, Dies
John Fontaine Keeling Jr., a former senior lecturer at Old Dominion University's Strome College of Business, died Aug. 20.
Keeling worked for several universities throughout his career, including Old Dominion. He joined ODU in 1991 as an instructor of marketing before becoming a lecturer in the Department of Management. Keeling retired in December 2016.
"John had an engaging sense of humor, as well as a strong commitment to those he worked with, whether it was students, faculty or staff," said Jeff Tanner, dean of the Strome College of Business.
Connie Merriman, associate dean for undergraduate programs, said Keeling was a favorite among students for two reasons.
"It was obvious he truly cared about them and their success, and he was extremely knowledgeable about the real world of business," she said.
Keeling, a Danville native, earned his M.B.A. at Virginia Tech. He served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and worked in the telecommunications industry.
According to an obituary provided by National Cremation of Virginia Beach, Keeling was also very active in the community, including service with WHRO public TV, United Way and serving on the Board of Directors of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce.
"He was also an active member of Wycliffe Presbyterian in Virginia Beach, where he taught Sunday school and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and various other outreach activities. Keeling enjoyed the company of close friends, tennis, card games and other social events."
Keeling was preceded in death by his youngest son, Scott. He is survived by wife, Judy; his daughter, Beth; his son, Jeff; three grandsons; a granddaughter, and several other relatives.
A funeral for Keeling will be held on Saturday, September 9, at 1 p.m. at Wycliffe Presbyterian Church, located at 1445 North Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to a charity of one's choice.
