Facilities Management Employees Named April Employees of the Month

Harvey Logan, Thomas Lambert and Roy Henderson are Old Dominion University's Employees of the Month for April.

Harvey Logan is a manager in Support Services and Recycling; Thomas Lambert is a recycling worker; and Roy Henderson is a senior moving/special events worker. In a combined effort this February, these three employees went far above and beyond their regular responsibilities to help the University during extreme weather.

The events unfolded during the week of February 16, 2015. Due to unexpected snow events, the University had a shortage of ice melt and additional supplies would not arrive for another week. After searching far and wide, the trio drove to Richmond in large box vans to pick up ice melt to keep the campus running despite the weather.

On the way back from Richmond, around 6:00pm, two of four rear tires on Henderson and Lambert's van blew out, stranding the vehicle on the side of Interstate 64 in Newport News. Lambert alerted Facilities Management of the situation and a truck repair service was called; however, the assistance would take several hours to arrive. Logan had just arrived on campus with his load of ice melt when he was informed of Henderson and Lambert's situation.

Around 10:00 p.m. the tires on Henderson and Lambert's truck were replaced, but the rims were too damaged for the truck to make it back to ODU. Harvey called a tow truck service, drove to Newport News to meet Henderson and Lambert and made sure the damaged vehicle was safely towed off Interstate 64.

The men then worked together in the heavy snow to transfer the load of ice melt from the damaged truck to Logan's truck to return to campus.

"Among the many amazing things about this night/early morning - not one complaint was uttered from Thomas, Roy or Harvey," said Rich Le Moal, facilities management. "They maintained their heads, kept themselves safe and, with no exaggeration, saved the day."

DETAILS ABOUT THE EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH PROCESS

The University Employee of the Month Selection Committee encourages employees to nominate their outstanding, "go the extra mile" colleagues and employees. This program is designed to acknowledge and reward employees whose accomplishments and/or demeanor exemplify excellence, quality service and commitment to ODU. Classified and AP faculty employees receive a framed certificate from the president, $175 and one day of leave. Hourly winners get $250, since they are not eligible to receive recognition leave.

Note: The selection committee needs specific examples that relate to each applicable criterion in order to select a nominee for the award. Nominations remain active for six months from date of submission and nominators may submit additional documentation to support a nominee during the active six months.

The criteria used to nominate an employee include the following:
