ODU Virginia Beach Hosting Reading by Nationally Known Poet D. Nurkse

Old Dominion University Virginia Beach is helping to celebrate National Poetry Month and the centennial anniversary of Muriel Rukeyer's "The Life of Poetry" with poetry readings and book sales by nationally known poet D. Nurkse, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in Room 244.

Nurkse, a faculty member at Sarah Lawrence College, is an award-winning author recognized by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships and as poet laureate of Brooklyn. His most recent work is titled "A Night in Brooklyn." His other collections of poetry include "The Rules of Paradise" (2001), "The Fall" (2003) and "The Border Kingdom" (2008).

The reading will be televised live at ODU's Tri-Cities and Peninsula higher education centers.

From 4:30-6:30 p.m. on April 10, Nurkse will join others for a seminar and panel discussion on teaching "The Life of Poetry":

  • Jan Freeman - founder and executive director of Paris Press, Poet and contributing editor of the National Poetry Review;
  • RenĂ©e Olander - poet, writer, editor and longtime English and creative writing instructor for students of all ages; and
  • Tim Seibles - award-winning author of five collections of poetry, including "Fast Animal," a 2012 National Poetry Award finalist, and associate professor of English and creative writing at ODU.
