Dr. Sandeep Kumar, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been named interim assistant dean of Research and Graduate Studies.

Kumar is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as well as the director of the Biomass Research Laboratory and the BCET Energy Cluster.

Kumar's expertise is in high-temperature and high-pressure biomass reactions and he is currently developing innovative techniques for extracting nutrients, bioproducts, and biofuels from algae, biomass, and municipal solid waste.

He is a recipient of the prestigious NSF CAREER award, a 2021-22 Fulbright scholarship to Italy, and has secured more than $6M external research grants from federal agencies and local industries.

Kumar holds four patents, has published a book, seven book chapters, and has written 52 peer-reviewed articles in addition to presenting at numerous national and international conferences.

He earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Auburn University following a previous career in industry and R&D.
