The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) recently selected winners for its US nationwide University Design Competition for Addressing Airport Needs for 2015-2016 academic year. The competition encourages out-of-the-box approaches to airport issues while providing quality educational experiences and exposure to aviation and airport-related careers. The competition is part of the ACRP which is funded by the FAA and managed by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium has four technical challenge areas: airport operations and maintenance; runway safety; airport environmental interactions; and airport management and planning.

Old Dominion University's Dr. Ghaith Rabadi and his Ph.D. student Bulent Soykan from the Department of Engineering Management & Systems Engineering (EMSE) tied for the second place in the airport management and planning category with their design titled, Multi-Objective Simulation-based Optimization of Runway Operations Scheduling Using a Hybrid Metaheuristic Algorithm.
