Two Climate-Focused Events to be Held at ODU Jan. 30

Two events at Old Dominion University on Monday, Jan. 30 reflect the University's ongoing concern and commitment to the issue of sea level rise and climate change.

At 7 p.m., there will be a free screening of "Before the Flood," a documentary on science and climate featuring actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The documentary will be shown in the Learning Commons @ Perry Library, Room 1310.

The screening is sponsored by the Old Dominion University Resilience Collaborative, Department of Political Science & Geography and Engineering Technology Department.

It will be followed by a discussion among attendees. The event is free and open to the public, but online registration is strongly encouraged.

"Before the Flood" looks at the future of climate resilience and research, said Carol Considine, associate professor of engineering technology, one of the co-sponsors of the screening and discussion. "We see these issues of sea level rise in Hampton Roads, and we need to talk about these issues and bring them to the front," Considine said.

The film takes a global perspective on climate and how it has already changed the world, said Mike Allen, assistant professor of political science and geography. It does not provide solutions, but can encourage local dialogue about planning, Allen added.

Intergovernmental Pilot Planning Project Overview

Earlier on Monday, Ray Toll, director of coastal resilience at Old Dominion, will deliver an overview of the Intergovernmental Pilot Planning Project, a two-year effort that last October released recommendations aimed at developing a regional approach to sea level rise.

At 3:30 p.m. in the first floor conference room of Innovation Reseach Park, Building II, 4211 Monarch Way, Toll will discuss the University's role as primary facilitator in developing a "whole of government, whole of community" approach to regional planning to mitigate and adapt to sea level rise.

The seminar is free and open to the public. It will also be webstreamed live and recorded online. Coffee and cookies will be available before the presentation begins.

The ODU Resilience Collaborative (ODURC) is a consortium of leading scholars actively engaged in research, education and outreach on critical issues of resilience at the community, regional, national and global levels. It replaced the Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative as a campus-wide effort for resilience research. The ODURC is open to all faculty studying all types of resilience and is not limited to flooding, sea level rise or climate research.
