Faculty Couple See Soccer Star Daughter, Angela Hucles, Win Olympic Gold

Old Dominion University faculty members Janis Sanchez-Hucles, professor of psychology and department chair, and Michael Hucles, associate professor of history, were in China Thursday to see their daughter, Angela, a star midfielder for U.S. women's soccer team, win her second Olympic gold medal.

The United States defeated Brazil in the finals match 1-0 on an extra-time goal by midfielder Carli Lloyd.

Hucles, 33, scored two goals in the U.S. team's 4-2 victory over Japan on Monday, and heading into the finals match was the team's top scorer with a total of 3 Olympic goals.

Four years ago at the Summer Olympics in Greece, Hucles was a member of the U.S. team that won a gold medal. When Hucles was named last summer to the U.S. Women's World Cup soccer team, her father said he and his wife were "pleased and grateful that our daughter has the opportunity to fulfill her dreams."

He added, "We have always taught our children that with success comes tremendous responsibility. I know of no greater responsibility that an athlete has than representing her or his country on the world stage. We were fortunate to see our daughter do this in the 2004 Olympics held in Greece."
