Applicants Sought for $1,000 Space Grant Bridge Awards

The Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC), whose members include Old Dominion University, is currently recruiting applicants to the 2013-14 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Bridge Scholarship Program.

Bridge grants of $1,000 are awarded to sophomores at VSGC member universities who are from a federally recognized minority group and who are enrolled full-time in a STEM field of study.

The program, which can lead to VSGC scholarships and fellowships, as well as to NASA internship programs, is a proven entryway into NASA and NASA-related employment in science and engineering. This is a competitive scholarship program, funded by NASA and the state of Virginia. Its goals are:

  • Increasing participation in STEM-related research and careers by students from any federally recognized minority who demonstrate high academic achievement and promise;
  • Promoting undergraduate STEM-related research by assisting students with establishing relationships with student and faculty mentors early in their academic career;
  • Increasing the diversity of applicants to VSGC's Undergraduate Research Scholarship Program by creating a bridge program that supports federally recognized minority students in their early undergraduate years;
  • Implementing the goals of the VSGC and NASA.
