ODU Physics Tent Will Be at Children's Festival
October 04, 2013
The AT&T Virginia Children's Festival Saturday, Oct. 5, at Town Point Park in Norfolk will offer a wide variety of entertainment, workshops and activities, including interactive physics demonstrations directed by about 30 faculty and student volunteers from the Old Dominion University Department of Physics.
Lawrence Weinstein, ODU Eminent Scholar and University Professor of physics, is one of the organizers of the festival's physics station. He said more than 2,000 children and parents are expected to attend the event, which will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m, and that his and his colleagues' involvement in the festival is the physics faculty's biggest outreach effort of the year. The physics demonstrations that children can watch or participate in will involve electricity, magnetism, rotation, light, motion and other physical phenomena.
The festival, which is designed primarily for children 10 and younger, will offer more than 100 creative and interactive activities, storytelling, hands-on workshops and educational displays, cultural experiences, arts and crafts, costumed characters and more.
Tickets are $3.
