ODU to Host First Military Financial Summit on Saturday

Military families will receive a day's worth of personal finance advice at the first-ever Military Financial Summit this Saturday at Old Dominion University.

The free event, co-sponsored by ODU, the Community Blueprint Network, Give an Hour and Blue Star Families, will offer support and advice on personal finance matters ranging from managing credit, to homeownership, to portable entrepreneurship for military spouses. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Webb Center, with registration from 8-9 a.m. Breakfast and lunch are included, and there will be free child care on site. Participants are encouraged to register in advance at http://connected.giveanhour.org/show/military-family-financial-summit.

Neale Godfrey, CEO and chairman of the Children's Financial Network, will be the keynote speaker. He will facilitate a hands-on workshop for parents and children in children's financial literacy, designed to help educate youngsters on how to manage money.

Other speakers for the Military Financial Summit include retired Navy Adm. Craig Quigley, executive director of the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Alliance; Vivian Greentree, director of research and policy with Blue Star Families; and Veronica Jorden, Military Spouse Business Association board member.

Old Dominion has forged strong links with the military through its ROTC programs, students attending school on the GI Bill and the large number of nationally renowned faculty who come to ODU from a military background. More than a quarter of ODU's 25,000 students have a direct connection to the military.

Give an Hour is a nonprofit organization dedicated to meeting the mental health needs of military personnel, their families and the communities affected by the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Hampton Roads Community Blueprint Network represents a collaborative group of community members who meet regularly, network and put "compassion into action" in support of military members and their families.

Blue Star Families is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping military families across America. Its mission is to support, empower and connect military families to each other, their communities and to people in power. To do so, Blue Star employees work directly with the Department of Defense, as well as members of local, state and federal governments, to bring military families' most important issues to light.
