Research Talk: Anne Cizmar on Campaign Rhetoric

Title: What's Hope Got to Do with It? Candidate Rhetoric in the 2012 Presidential Election

Recently there has been an emphasis on the role of emotions in politics. Many studies examine how affect, cognition, and emotion shape individuals’ issue attitudes, policy positions, minority attitudes, and voting behavior. Of the existing literature that focuses on elite level rhetoric and campaign communications, much of it focuses primarily on campaign advertisements, which rely on negative emotions like fear and anger. Little work has been done on other types of campaign communication, namely candidate campaign speeches. Anne compares emotional rhetoric between campaign advertisements and candidate speeches by conducting content analysis of ads and speeches.

Anne Cizmar is Assistant Professor in the Department of Government at Eastern Kentucky University. Anne has a PhD from the University of Maryland (2011) and her work has appeared in Political Communication and Political Research Quarterly. The talk will be held in BAL 7009 from 1:00 to 2:15 on Friday February 14.
