College of Engineering’s Jayne Massey Named July Employee of the Month

Jayne M. Massey, an administrative assistant in the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology's Department of Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Engineering, has been selected as Old Dominion University's July Employee of the Month.

In recognition of her achievement, Massey was presented a framed certificate and check for $175 by ODU President John R. Broderick during a July 30 ceremony. She will also receive a day of recognition leave in conjunction with the honor.

Massey was nominated by Richard L. "Trey" Mayo III, academic advisor and program manager in the Department of Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Engineering where she has worked for the past two years after moving from the University Card Center.

Mayo cited Massey's professionalism, ethics, respectful and collaborative nature, knowledge base, leadership, enthusiasm, initiative and creative innovations in making the nomination.

"Based on Ms. Massey's performance with MSVE and ODU, it is clear she is committed to a culture of care, civility and concern to all of the various constituencies we serve," Mayo wrote in the nomination. "I consider her to be a valuable asset to our office..."

In a letter of recommendation to the selection committee, Frederic McKenzie, professor and chair of the Department of Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Engineering, wrote that Massey "epitomizes" the praiseworthy ODU employee who is especially adept at managing various assignments.

McKenzie said that Massey is a "consummate receptionist" who supports faculty and staff as well as students in the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program, all of which she does with "amazing speed and efficiency."

"Most of all, I would like to praise Jayne for her professional and accommodating attitude, which is always a welcome respite for our many visitors," McKenzie said.

DETAILS ABOUT THE EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH PROCESS

The University Employee of the Month Selection Committee encourages employees to nominate their outstanding, "go the extra mile" colleagues and employees. This program is designed to acknowledge and reward employees whose accomplishments and/or demeanor exemplify excellence, quality service and commitment to ODU. Classified and AP faculty employees receive a framed certificate from the president, $175 and one day of leave. Hourly winners get $250, since they are not eligible to receive recognition leave.

Note: The selection committee needs specific examples that relate to each applicable criterion in order to select a nominee for the award. Nominations remain active for six months from date of submission and nominators may submit additional documentation to support a nominee during the active six months.

The criteria used to nominate an employee include the following:

  • An outstanding accomplishment that benefited the department/students.
  • Extraordinary service to internal and/or external customers.
  • Inspiring initiative/leadership.
  • Enthusiasm/energy given to assigned work.
  • Teamwork.
  • Exemplary efforts to nurture a climate of care, concern and civility.
  • Creative innovations to service, process or work tools.
