Darden College of Education Profs Awarded Fulbrights for Research in Portugal

Two faculty members from Old Dominion's Darden College of Education - Dennis Gregory and Silvana Watson - have received Fulbright awards to conduct research in Portugal during the fall 2014 semester.

Gregory, associate professor of higher education, I will be doing research at the Centre for Research in Higher Education Policies at the University of Porto in the city of Porto, which is in the northwestern part of the country on the Atlantic coast.

He will work with a fellow researcher there, Maria deLourdes Machado-Taylor, studying accreditation policies and procedures in Portugal, and also examine similar policies in Spain, Italy and, possibly, Greece. Gregory will then do comparisons with accreditation models in the United States. As a secondary project, if time allows, he hopes to examine the provision of student services in universities in those countries.

Under her Fulbright Fellowship, Watson, associate professor of special education, will work with a group of researchers from the University of Minho in Braga, Portugal, located in the northwestern part of the country. They will conduct research on elementary students' cognitive functions and their relationship to mathematical skills growth from first grade to fourth grade.

Both of the Fulbright awards are for three months and begin in September.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. More than 150 countries currently participate in the program. The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department oversees the operations of the Fulbright Program throughout the world.
