Security Operations Center (SOC)

The student-run Security Operations Center (SOC) at Old Dominion University offers students immersive, hands-on experience defending real-world systems while directly supporting the university’s cybersecurity operations. Guided by full-time professional mentors, students conduct initial incident responses and strengthen technical skills, gaining applicable real-world experience while also earning academic credit. This student- led, professional environment cultivates accountability, teamwork, and career readiness, while actively contributing to the protection of ODU’s digital assets.

Innovation Lab

The Innovation Lab at Old Dominion University serves as an experiential learning hub where students explore creativity, design, and problem‑solving through hands‑on STEM activities. As part of the ODU Center for Educational Innovation and Opportunity, the Innovation Lab engages learners from diverse disciplines in team‑based projects that challenge them to develop real‑world solutions to complex problems. Students gain experience with tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, robotics, and other makerspace equipment, while applying critical thinking and collaboration skills that complement their academic studies. By bridging classroom concepts with practical innovation work, the Innovation Lab exemplifies the School of Cybersecurity’s commitment to preparing students for the dynamic challenges of technology‑driven careers.  Learn More and Apply

Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate Research in Cybersecurity offers students a paid, mentored opportunity to engage in independent cybersecurity research with real impact. In partnership with the Coastal Virginia Center for Cybersecurity Innovation (COVA CCI) and the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI), students from across the region work with academic or industry mentors to define, investigate, and complete a research project on a topic of their choosing. Participants present their findings at a semester‑end research showcase and contribute to the broader body of cybersecurity knowledge while earning a stipend for their work. This experience deepens technical expertise, strengthens critical thinking and communication skills, and enhances professional readiness, all while showcasing students’ ability to conduct meaningful research in a dynamic, real‑world context.  Learn More and Apply

Graduate Research

The Innovate Cyber Challenge is an experiential learning program that immerses undergraduate students in real-world cybersecurity problem-solving. Offered in partnership with the Coastal Virginia Center for Cyber Innovation (COVA CCI) and the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI), the challenge brings together students from Virginia’s public institutions to collaborate on cybersecurity issues facing local organizations.

Using a human-centered design approach, students work in teams to research problems, engage with stakeholders, test ideas, and develop innovative solutions. The program strengthens technical skills while building critical competencies such as problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and professional communication. Participants receive a $1,000 stipend upon successful completion, and the program is designed to be accessible to students with varying levels of cybersecurity experience through structured guidance and weekly virtual sessions.
