  • 1) Find a definition of the word "argument;" write down the definition and the source that you got the definition from. Then look for a one or two sentence argument; consider your textbooks, a web site, the Exponent, etc.; write down the argument and the source that you got this information from. As you read, think about 1) the arguments that you and others (e.g., your peers, the media) make about the subject you are working with, 2) how the NCH chapter relates to the hypertext essay.     • Read about Internet Research in the NCH Chapters 8-9 (p. 86-107); use what you learn to justify the sources in your working bibliography.
    • Working Bibliography (see p. 75 in NCH). Find the bibliographic information for 12 sources that you may potentially use for your Annotated Bibliography. For this working bibliography, you will need to 1) provide a citation in APA format (see Chapter 13 in NCH) and 2) write two or three sentences about each source explaining why it will be useful for your research. You will need to provide information for 4 popular publications and 4 academic publications; the other four can be from either. Bring a hard copy to class and turn it in to the instructor.

  • Read the following article by CNN about the aftermath of English-Only laws in California. Think about how Second Language Speakers are represented. Be prepared to talk about this at the beginning of class.
  • Read the article by Ilona Leki. In a 250 word response, 1) identify her argument, 2) choose a subject (i.e., person(s), place, event, concept, or thing) that she represents in her article, 3) describe your general impression about how Leki feels about this subject and explain why 4) find several examples where she represents this subject and explain how the words and phrases that she uses supports or conflicts with the impression that you have (#3). Submit this to the instructor in the body of an email.

  • Reread the Hypertext Essay "Representation as Argument" ( make sure you read through all eight nodes and explore some of the links that go outside of the essay). Think about how your subject is represented by other and how you would represent your subject.
  • Read the following Time article about Pearl Harbor, think about how it relates to the hypertext essay in terms of how the movie represents the historical event, how Disney represents the movie for difference audiences, and how the Time writer represents Disney's representation; be prepared to apply the hyper text essay to this article.
  • Reflection #2: In 250 words write a reflection in which you think about the subject you are researching; you may choose to respond to some of the instructors comments, or you may think about how the hypertext essay applies to your subject . Send the reflection in the body of an email to the instructor.

  • Analyzing Data

    • In a 250-350 word memo addressed to the instructor, report the result of your data collection. In the body of the memo, you will 1) briefly explain the purpose of your data collection, 2) briefly explain how you collected the data, 3) report the most important data from your field research, and 4) draw some preliminary conclusions (in other words, use the data to answer your research question). Due the word limit, you will have to choose which details are most important to represent. Submit this as a hard copy to the instructor. You will also want to include the complete transcripts of your interview or the complete summary of your survey results, as an appendix (stapled to the back of the memo).

  • Formal introduction to Rhetoric

    • In the NCH, read Chapter 2 (6-17) about "Preparing," pay particular attention to section 2a. Also read "On Writing" from Lisa Ede's Work in Progress. In a 250 word response, explain how you will apply the principles of rhetoric, as you read in section 2a and the Ede piece, to writing about your specific subject. In other words you are going to talk me through some of the preliminary choices that you will make to write the Research Paper. Send this response in the body of an email to the instructor.

  • Analyzing your audience

    Due

    • Decide on a "publication" in which you would write an argumentative article about your subject. In 250 words, state what the audience of the publication values. Some questions you may want to ask yourself are:
      • who is this publication written for? what specializations does the audience need to read this publication?
      • who else may have access to these publications? do the writers consider this audience?
      • what type of evidence is valued in this publication?
      • what kind of biases do the writers have? are they literal or inferred?

      Cite evidence from a sample text that demonstrates that the audience values what you think it does. You do not have to limit yourself to the article on your subject; it is highly encouraged that you also look at other texts in this publication. This "publication" may be one of the publications that you used in your Annotated Bibliography. Send this response in the body of an email to the instructor.
