  • display an informed understanding of your subject,
  • demonstrate your understanding of the multiple perspectives and representations of your subject,
  • learn how to synthesize multiple perspectives
  • learn how to develop an informed argument and support it with evidence.

Instructions

Now that you have collected several different representation about your subject, and developed and understanding about the strategies used to produce these representations, you are now responsible for developing an informed argument that states the strategies that you would use to represent your subject for a specific audience. Your research paper will include

  • background information about your subject,
  • a description of several representations with an analysis of the strategies the writer uses,
  • an informed argument that states the strategies that you would use for a specific audience,
  • evidence that supports your argument,
  • visuals that support your represenation.

Background Information

You will want to provide enough background information about your subject for an audience who might not have any previous exposure to this subject. In your presentation of the background information you may choose to include your personal experience with the subject or you may choose to practice the appearance of objectivity.

The background information should be detailed, but it should cover no more than 15-20% of the essay. In other words, you will have to choose the information that you think is most relevant for understanding the important issues of your subject.

Multiple Representations

All of you have chosen subject that have been represented in various ways. Identify some of the siginificant representations and explain the strategies that the writer uses to create a certain effect. The evidence for this section will come from the specific texts or data collection (see Annotated Bibliography) that you have chosen to analyze. Take into consideration,

  • who is writing the articles or providing the representation,
  • where you got the representation,
  • what the person's or publication's interest in this representation
  • how the writer or publication uses text, visuals, and evidence for influencing how their audience views the subject.

Informed Argument

Most of you are experienced with writing an argumentative essay in which you develop one argument and support it with evidence. You WILL NOT be doing that for this essay. Instead, you will be making an argument about the best choices (or strategies) to make for writing about your subject for a specific audience. Although you are only writing about how you would write an argumentative essay; this is an argumentative essay because you will be expected to provide evidence about an anticipated audience audience and about your subject that demonstrates that the choices that you would make for representing your subject to a specific audience are the most viable. In order to situate your representation for a specific audience, you will have to choose a specific publication; then charaterize the audience of this publication and the audience's values. Do not think about your argument as a discussion that is separate from the discussion about multiple representations; instead think about your argument as a response to these other representations. As a result, you will use details from previous representations (see Annotated Bibliography) to support your argument.

Do not forget to include in-text citations and a Works Cited (both in APA format).

Visuals

Since this project is about representation, you will need to include two visual to represent your subject. When including visuals, consider the following...

  • choose visuals that are relevant to your subject and how the subject is discussed in your text.
  • where you will place the visuals. Do not just stick the visuals anyplace; think about how the visuals work with your text.
  • how the visuals work with your text. Do not let the visuals speak for themselves. Explain how you would use these visuals to develop your argument.
  • include captions that describe the image and reference where the image is from. Include a full citation in the Works Cited.
