Purpose

The purposes of this assignment are for you to...

  • sythnthize what you have learned about reading and writing arguments/representation,
  • reflect upon what you have learned this semester,
  • learn and practice strategies of revision,
  • demonstrate the process of your research,
  • learn more about writing with electronic media

Instructions

Revision of Previous Assignments

  • Read through all of the assignments that you have completedm, as well as the instructor's and peers' comments.
  • Revise the following texts
    • PowerPoint Presentation (mostly edit); do not change the content unless you were asked to.
    • annotated bibliography,
    • data collection memo (to reflect how you actually collected the data),
    • memo reporting data results
    • research paper.
  • Do not revise your earlier texts (i.e. the PowerPoint presentation) to reflect how you think about the subject now. Instead you will want to leave the text as is to show how your thinking has developed over the duration of this project.

  • When you revise consider the instructor's and your peers' comments.  Do not just fix grammar and spelling; revising is rethinking the overall structure of the text that you wrote to see if you have...
    • fulfilled the assignment,
    • made the purpose of the text clear,
    • organized the text in viable way,
    • made the text understandable to a specific or diverse audience,
    • and explained the relevancy of your examples and evidence.

Electronic Portfolio

  • After you have revised all of your texts, convert them into web pages. This includes the PowerPoint presentation for the Current Knowledge | Proposal.

  • Write a splash page that introduces your overall research project.  On this page include
    • A 400-500 word statement. In this statement...
      • explain how the elements or pieces (i.e., the Presentation, Memos, Bibliography, Paper) work together
      • explain how your thinking about the subject you are working with has developed from the Current Knowledge | Proposal Assignment to the Research Paper
      • explain what your audeince will learn by reading through the series of assignments that you have linked to this page. Make linked references to specific texts.
    • Links to your assignments.
    • Link to your email.
    • Anything that is relevant to your research that will help explain your project (i.e., images, text, links).
    • Also, try to make links on each page back to your splash page.

Criteria and Evaluation

The portfolio is 80% of your grade (400 points). I will be looking for evidence...

  • that you understood the process of writing that started with proposal and ended with the research paper; therefore show how each assignment builds upon each other.

  • that you understand how arguments are constructed in the texts through the writer's choices; therefore you will want to demonstrate that you can both identify an argument and write and support an argument.

  • that you understand issues of audience; therefore, you should be able to justify your decisions about how you write about your subject for a specific audience.

  • that you can competantly analyze these arguments/represenations; therefore you will want to explain why the writer developed the argument/represenation using the respective stategies.

  • that you can revise your own work by rethinking through your arguments and how you constructed them; therefore consider the instructor's feedback, but ultimately revise your assignments to construct the sound argument that you want to make. Understand why you made these decisions.

  • that you can complete the assignments as specified; therefore reread through the instructions and make sure you have both completed all of the assignments and followed each assignment's instructions.

Due

No later than 5pm on July 31, 2000. Send the instructor a message with the URL (include the http://), stating that the portfolio is ready to be evaluated. Also, if your web page can be viewed better in a specific browser--either Explorer or Navigator--note this within the body of the email. Make your electronic portfolio accessible until you receive your grade in this class.
