Conversion Documentation: MS Word to HTML
The purpose of this documentation is to help you convert a MS Word documetn into HTML so that it can be viewed in ProNoun. You may want to bookmark this page because we will be using it throughout the semester.
Create a "www" folder
- Click on the "Home" icon on your desktop; this is your Home Directory.
- Go to "File" on the tool bar.
- Click on "New Folder." A new folder will appear in your home directory.
- Move the mouse pointer to the box containing the folder name (which should be "untitled folder")
- When the box around the folder title lights up, type "www" into the box.
**Any html documents placed in this folder will be publishable.**
Saving in MS Word
- Launch the Microsoft Word (Word 98 or newer) application.
- Go to "File" on the tool bar.
- Click on "Open."
- Navigate through the directory to find the document that you want to convert.
- If you have not saved your document as a "Word Document...
- Go to "File" on the tool bar.
- Click on "Save As."
- At the bottom of the window, look at the "Save File Type As" options and select "Word Document."
- Now Click "Save."This will save most of the formatting.
Saving as HTML
- Go to "File" on the tool bar.
- Click on "Save As HTML."
- When the window appears, navigate to save this file in your "www" folder.
- Look at the "Save File Type As" options and make sure that you have selected "HTML Document."
- Make sure that you add the ".html" suffix to the end of your file name (ex. ked.doc should become ked.html)
- Now you can click "Save."
Publishing Your Page
There are two means to publish your web page.
telnet
Checking Your Publication
- Find "picket.cc" in the telnet options.
- Type your login and password
- At the first "fsh>" prompt, type <webenable> and then [RETURN].
- At the second "fsh>" prompt, type <chmod -R 755 www> and then [RETURN].
- At the third "fsh>" prompt, type <exit> to quit.
- Then check your publication.
netscape
- Go to the "My Career Account" Icon and double click.
- When the your Career Acount options launch, choose "Change My Web Page Permissions."
- Read through the node and then click on the "Change My Permissions" button. Be patient: the computer will take up to a minute to make these changes.
- Then check your publication.
- Launch the Netscape application.
- In the url box type <http://icdweb.cc.purdue.edu/~<your login>/>. This will launch your web directory.
- Click on the file that you just converted to html.
- Look at the url of the page; copy this down letter for letter/number for number. This must be exact.
