Lab Software

ITS computer labs are loaded with standard software and plugins for student, faculty, and staff use. The standard software lists are provided below.

ITS Academic Lab workstations are loaded with the necessary plugins to function with homework websites. These include CourseCompass, MyITLab, and MyCompLab.

In addition to standard software, the labs also provide specialized software such as Adobe Photoshop, ArcGIS, and others on specified workstations. See "Specialized Software" in table below for information on location of this software

Software Installation Requests
To request the installation of software in the academic or teaching labs, please click on Software Install Request. This link will take you to footprints. You will create issue, complete the first 2 sections and when you get to the 3 section "problem type" choose Labs there will be a pop-up
menu to enter which lab. This pop-up menu gives you the option to choose all academic labs or all teaching labs. Then enter "category" choose software request there will be a pop-up menu to enter name of software and version.

Deadlines for Software Installation Requests
Software installation requests for public and instructional labs will be accepted from any faculty/staff member. Installation requests for departmental labs will be accepted from the designated lab managers.

ITS will guarantee that course specific software (which is properly licensed and does not create other issues in the University networked environment) will be installed in the appropriate lab if all material has been received by the following deadlines:

Fall Semester - July 15
Spring Semester - November 15
Summer (all sessions) - April 1

Requests for installation of software on University-owned laptops at the Virginia Beach Higher Ed Center are accepted on an on-going basis. Please allow 30 days for testing and installation.

Requests After the Deadline
ITS researches, installs and tests lab software applications before the start of each semester in order to provide secure, efficient and reliable software applications for the labs. Once all lab software issues are resolved, the labs are imaged for the semester to create a production lab environment. This process assures that faculty and staff has reliable applications in the labs. No new software installation requests will be taken for the current semester after the deadline has passed.

Protocol for Installation of Specialized Software
ITS will research any software product that has been requested by the faculty/staff and determine if it can be effectively installed. The person requesting the software will be notified via e-mail about the outcome/status of the testing and any issues that may arise.

When choosing software for the upcoming semester, faculty/staff should keep in mind the environment for which the installation will take place.

  • The standard policy requires that the 32-bit version be utilized.
  • All software must be compatible with the University networked environment which includes Novell, Microsoft and Unix systems and services.
  • No data files produced from the application will be stored permanently on the local lab computer.
  • At the conclusion of each semester, designated departmental lab managers will be provided with a list of all software installed in their departmental lab. The manager will review the list and notify OCCS of any software that is no longer needed.
  • Planning is critical for successful software installation. Sufficient time must be provided to thoroughly test the network environment and to determine if the new software is compatible with the standard University software.

Instructor's Responsibilities
ITS will notify the requesting instructor or department when the software is installed and ready to test. The requester will be required to test the software within 5 days of being notified by ITS. The instructor will notify ITS immediately of any issues with the requested applications with examples of where in the documented requirements the application is not working so the problems can be recreated.

Textbooks with Accompanying Software
It is becoming very common for textbooks to have accompanying software. Due to the configuration of our labs, students may not automatically be able to run the software from the CD drive or disk drive.

Web Based Applications and Plug-ins
The instructor should always test web based applications which are used in courses in the labs. Being able to run the software on your office computer does not guarantee that it will run on the lab computers. Sometimes plug-ins can cause a conflict and will not allow the application to work properly.
