Where You'll Train
Urology of Virginia has been instrumental in providing comprehensive urological care in Hampton Roads for over 100 years. The outpatient private practice has a longstanding history with Eastern Virginia Medical School, serving as faculty and becoming one of the first established departments. Residents will spend time in the clinic during their first and third years focusing on the outpatient clinic experience while gaining exposure to general urology, urologic oncology, urodynamics, and reconstructive urology.
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the primary teaching hospital for for our medical school, houses the area’s only Level 1 trauma and burn unit, the region’s premier heart hospital, and the Sentara Transplant Center, the first in the region to perform kidney, heart, and pancreas transplants.Sentara Norfolk General houses two da Vinci robotic systems which are dedicated to the Department of Urology 15 days each month. Residents perform a variety of general urologic, oncologic, and reconstructive procedures under the supervision of attending physicians while gaining graduated autonomy.
Located just off-site of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the Sentara Ambulatory Care Clinic provides residents with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with a diverse patient population. Each Thursday morning, our residents participate in the clinic, providing urologic care to uninsured and underinsured patients in the Hampton Roads community.
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is the only freestanding children’s hospital in Virginia. With 206 beds, it serves as the regional pediatric referral center for coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The hospital is a Level 1 pediatric trauma center and is home to the area's largest and most advanced neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as the Spina Bifida Clinic.
Residents will gain experience treating a variety of both general and complex pediatric urologic conditions and performing pediatric urologic procedures, including robotic surgery.
Naval Medical Center Portsmouth serves as one of the Navy’s three major teaching hospitals andis the longest continuously operating Navy hospital. The Urology Clinic at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth provides comprehensive care for conditions including urinary obstruction, BPH,erectile dysfunction, and bladder, prostate, testicular, and kidney cancers.
Residents will train at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth during their second and third years, providing medical care to active-duty and retired military members in the community.
Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital offers specialized tertiary services as well as advanced clinical services to the Hampton Roads community. The 273-bed facility houses two da Vinci robotic surgical systems, with at least one and in some cases both systems, dedicated to the Department of Urology each day of the month. This provides residents with substantial exposure to robotic surgery and frequent opportunities to develop and refine their robotic surgical skills throughout their training.
Sentara Leigh Hospital is a 274-bed acute care facility that houses two da Vinci robotic surgical systems, with three dedicated operating room days each month for the Department of Urology.
Residents will have the opportunity to gain additional exposure to robotic surgery at the facility while primarily focusing on general urologic procedures.
Chesapeake Regional Medical Center The only independent, community-based hospital in Hampton Roads, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center houses 310 beds and two da Vinci robotic surgical systems.
Residents will have the opportunity to gain additional exposure to robotic surgery at the facility while primarily focusing on general urologic procedures.
Chesapeake Regional Surgery Center – Virginia Beach is an outpatient ambulatory surgery center that strives to optimize the patient experience and promote quick healing by providing patients on-site comprehensive urologic care including minimally invasive robotic surgery.
Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center has serviced Western Hampton Roads for over 80 years. The hospital serves a broad and diverse patient population across the western portion of the community.
Residents will have significant exposure to a variety of patient demographics and clinical presentations. While working closely with attending physicians, residents will develop their skills managing a range of general urologic diagnoses, with a particular emphasis on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and endourologic procedures.
