It is the Policy of the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and the EVMS School of Health Professions (SHP) at Old Dominion University that written standards, criteria and procedures for the review and recommendation of individuals for faculty appointment, promotion, and tenure be established, maintained and disseminated to faculty.
Accordingly, the definitions and standards contained within this document pertain to the initial appointment, subsequent promotion, and tenure (when applicable) of all EVMS legacy school faculty engaged in the diverse areas of teaching, clinical care, research/discovery and administration/service.
In order to affirm the multiple roles that EVMS legacy school faculty contribute to the school's mission and vision and for our community, all faculty pursue pathway toward appointment, promotion and tenure (when applicable). The process is outlined in the Tenure policy in the ODU T&R Handbook. The established global evaluative system takes into account the responsibilities and roles of each faculty group
Faculty Appointments
All initial faculty appointments to EVMS or the SHP shall be made in accordance with ODU's applicable faculty handbook.
All appointments should be requested through the relevant Department Chair within the School of Medicine, or the Senior Associate Vice President and Dean of the EVMS School of Health Professions.
Appointment Nomination Package Required Checklists:
Salaried Faculty
- Nomination Letter from Department Chair or Senior Associate Vice President and Dean of the EVMS School of Health Professions
- EVMS Legacy CV- updated within the last 6 months
- New Faculty Information Form- must be signed and dated within the last 6 months
- Copy of certificate/diploma for terminal degrees that cannot be verified online
- Transcript from Terminal degree Institution - with raised seal (Salaried Faculty Only - MD, DO & DPM degrees are exempt because of other additional requirements)
- Provide justification:
- If a physician - must be Board eligible or Board certified
- If a license professional - provide documentation of certification
Non-Salaried / VA Faculty
- Nomination Letter from Department Chair or Senior Associate Vice President and Dean of the EVMS School of Health Professions
- Professional CV - updated within the last 6 months
- New Faculty Information Form - must be signed and dated within the last 6 months
- Copy of certificate/diploma for terminal degrees that cannot be verified online
- Provide justification:
- If a physician - must be Board eligible or Board certified
- If a license professional - provide documentation of certification
Faculty of Practice
- Nomination Letter from Department Chair or Senior Associate Vice President and Dean of the EVMS School of Health Professions
- Professional CV - updated within the last 6 months
- New Faculty Information Form - must be signed and dated within the last 6 months
- Copy of certificate/diploma for terminal degrees that cannot be verified online
- Provide justification:
- If a physician - must be Board eligible or Board certified
- If a license professional - provide documentation of certification
- In general, Faculty of Practice are expected to commit at least 50 hours to EVMS schools per year. This time commitment can be met by actively participating in grand rounds or other department conferences, serving on a committee, delivering didactic lectures, providing ward attending coverage, precepting students or residents, participating in other teaching activities at EVMS legacy schools, or by participating in other activities agreed to by the faculty member and their designee.
