Highlighting Bachelor of Science Environmental Health BSEH Alumni
Rashelly Benitez Bland, Class of 2015

In the past 6 years since Rashelly graduated from our BS Environmental Health program she has soared to the top of her profession as a Food Safety Specialist. After several successful internships, she secured a position as a EH Specialist Sr. after only one year at the Virginia Beach Health Department. She quickly rose up the ranks based on her competence and accomplishments and is currently The Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Standards Coordinator for the Virginia Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Of all of our alumni in the past 10 years, Rashelly has stood out as an exemplary member of our environmental health profession. Her bilingual skills allow her to promote state goals of diversity as she conducts professional audits and training. She has even made time to come back to ODU and speak to our seniors in the field about their own professional development, and sends us job announcements in the environmental health field. Rashelly is a consummate leader and is on track to move up to more executive level responsibilities.
She excels at her job and enjoys an excellent professional reputation, often consulted on program compliance and regulations. She earned her Food Safety Specialist Senior status, received her FDA Commission Credential, successfully completed re-standardization and FDA field audits, and was chosen as the Food Safety Program's Inspector of the Year in 2019. She was also elected as an Executive Board Member for the Virginia Conference of CASA for the 2020-2021 term. Rashelly has also been selected to serve as a panelist on a national live webinar on conducting virtual inspections during to COVID-19 Pandemic.
The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health is excellent preparation for a variety of career fields, and we are very proud of Rashelly and her success!
