Purpose

Memory has often been considered a canon that focused on how rhetor will remember what one is going to say. Yet more recent scholarship questions this simplicity and wonders whether we should also consider how to make one's rhetorical message memorable. Today we will discuss the different strategies for using memory.

Discussion–What was I Talking About?

As a class, we will address the following questions...

  • What questions do you have about the readings?
  • How does the author of Rhetorica ad Herennium distinguish natural memory from artificial memory? Which does the author prefer and why? What strategies does the author suggest for developing strategies for memory?
  • What four principles does Reynolds use to make memory relevant to the composition classroom? What argument is he pushing against. How would you design an activity or assignment that prompts writing to understand how to use this canon?
  • What is Villanueva's argument about memory and race? How do the texts he uses in his article illustrate this point? How might Villanueva respond to "Chocolate Rain"?
