Demonstration
of Application
Purpose
This assignment
gives you the opportunity to apply course material in a way that both
provides evidence that you understand the scholarship and allows you to
generate texts (papers, plans, and/or tools) that you can use after this
course.
Instructions–Invention
Your
first task is to choose a theory, a practice, or an issue related to
the course content. Then you will...
- decide
the type of text you think will 1) be usable after this course and
2) demonstrate what you have learned from this course. Types of texts
can include, but are not limited to:
- traditional
argumentative paper
- a
pedagogical outline for a educational unit with rationale
- a
series of academic assignments with rationales
- a
PowerPoint for a workshop with script and rationale
- a
YouTube video
- conduct
additional research on the topic. You are required to provide a grounded
rationale for your position or practice.
Instructions–Writing
The
writing process will vary from project to project.
However, the following parameters will be consistent across projects:
- choose
an appropriate genre for the project and follow the generic conventions
- in
50-200 words explain the audience and context of your project. The
instructor will use this information to give you a grade and it will
inform his feedback.
- 2500-3500
words or the equivalent. If you are not doing a paper, you should
discuss the equivalacy with the instructor. Depending upon the type
of text you produce, the word count can be divided between the text
you produce and a scholarly explanation of how you are using rhetoric
in this text. If your application of specific rhetorical scholarship
is not self-evident, then you will need to compose such a statement.
Instructions–Poster
Session
On
the day the DOA is due we will have a poster session in which you will
produce a poster that displays your application of rhetoric–as
explained in your text. You should be prepared to talk to your peers
or any guests about your work. Examples will be provided prior to the
poster session.
Criteria
Logistics:
In addition
to the general evaluation
criteria, the instructor will be looking for evidence of...
- a sense
of audiencedo you provide enough information that your audience
will understand the context of the text? If this text is going to be
used in professional setting, can an audience with your expertise take
this text and use it without your assistance?
- does
your text converse with and contribute to the academic discussion on
rhetoric?
- an informed
understanding of rhetoric. Does your application demonstrate an understanding
of rhetoric, especially related to the concepts you have chosen?
- a well
supported argument about how you applied rhetoric
- appropriate
use of conventions, including MLA or APA citation formatting
