Beyond Clinic Walls (BCW) connects students with older adults residing in the Norfolk area, focusing on those in isolating environments, including those who are unable to commute and lack social contacts and support.
Beyond Clinic Walls (BCW) has two opportunities for Medical and Health Professions students to be involved in:
Silver Surfers-a person-centered digital literacy program designed to help older adults confidently use technology for health, communication, and community engagement. Technology has the ability to enhance and enrich the lives of older adults, strengthen communication, reduce isolation, provide cognitive stimulation, and give access to information and services.
- Student coaches receive training to guide participants through a three-phase, all virtual curriculum-from basic device usage to utilizing sophisticated apps.
- Silver Surfer Coaches teach older adults to learn or refine their computer skills to keep them engaged, entertained and connected to family, friends and care providers.
- Coaches deliver lessons to help participants connect to Wi-Fi, navigate websites, set up and use email, use video conferencing tools (Zoom, WhatsApp), access telehealth and community resources, avoid scams and practice digital safety.
Dementia Friends-a global movement that changes the way people think, act and talk about dementia. During the interactive session, you will increase your understanding of dementia and think about the small things that you can do to make a difference for people living with dementia in your community.
- Dementia Friends Champions participate in Dementia Friends information sessions.
- Champions are equipped with the knowledge and activities needed to facilitate a Dementia Friends Information Session with friends, family, colleagues and the wider community.
- Champions learn to guide participants through activities and discussion that cover the five key messages everyone should know about dementia.
Additional Benefits to BCW members:
- Participate in the various activities sponsored by the Geriatric Student Interest Group called SAGE-Students for the Advancement of Geriatric Education.
- Receive mentorship in research endeavors with the geriatricians in the Glennan Center.
- Gain the opportunity to attend specialty clinics.
- Obtain financial support for scholarly endeavors.
