Short Analysis Paper 1 - Ethos, Pathos and Logos

In this 2 - 3 page (double spaced) paper, you will analyze one of your own pieces of writing for uses of ethos, pathos and logos. You will want to think about both the space that each of these appeals has, how that might relate to the type of topic involved, and what you were hoping to do to persuade the audience. For this you can use any type of writing, but it should be something relatively long (5-6 pages minimum) and fairly recent so that you remember your writing process relatively well.

You will need to include a copy of the paper you are analyzing. You can either submit an MSWord document or scan and send a PDF file.

Note: I'll stop reading after page 3. Keep your writing short and focused. Use quotes from your own work (but you don't have to cite them) and refer to the definitions used by the theorists we are working with (these you do have to cite if you quote or paraphrase). You will want to make certain you use a standard font (Times, Times New Roman, Helvetica, etc.) in a common size (10 or 12 point) and include your name and page numbers. You will be submitting these electronically in the Digital Dropbox in Blackboard. Use a file name that clearly identifies it as yours, and REMEMBER TO INCLUDE YOUR INITIALS!!! (paper1_jer.doc).

I will return the papers electronically and use the comment function in MSWord to comment upon your text. If you don't have access to a version of MSWord that can view comments, please let me know.

You will be graded on how well you consider:

Purpose - how well it fits the assignment criteria and demonstrates an understanding of the rhetorical terminology.

Genre - how well the paper follows short research paper conventions.

Ethos - how well you present yourself as a scholarly rhetor through use of good arrangement of topics and clear, well-written prose.

Audience - how well you understand your audience needs by providing adequate background information, explanation of terms, and persuade through the use of ethos, pathos and logos.

Short Analysis Paper 2 - Invention, Style and Arrangement

In this 2 - 3 page (double spaced) paper, you will analyze one of your own pieces of writing for uses of invention, style and arrangement. You will want to think about how each of these canons played a role in the initial brainstorming/writing and the final stages of your work, how their use might relate to the type of topic involved, and what you were hoping to do to persuade the audience. You can use the piece of writing you used for the 1st short analysis, or you might choose to use something different.

You will need to include a copy of the paper you are analyzing. You can either submit an MSWord document or scan and send a PDF file.

Short Analysis Paper 3 - Kairos, Memory and Delivery

In this 2 - 3 page (double spaced) paper, you will analyze one of your own pieces of writing for uses of memory and delivery and look at the context and the kairos that prompted the writing. You will want to think about both the use of all of these terms, how that might relate to the type of topic involved and the rhetorical situation it was presented in, and what you were hoping to do to persuade the audience. For this you can use any type of writing, but it should be something relatively long (5-6 pages minimum) and fairly recent so that you remember your writing process relatively well.

Class Discussion Leaders

You and two other students will lead the class discussion on one day. You will be in charge of identifying main ideas in the readings and applying the Rhetorical Terminology Chart. You will also want to supply a short sample for analysis that fits the topic for the day. This short sample should be 1 - 2 pages max. You will want to use the Analysis Sheet to assist yourselves during the discussion. Note: To assist your presentation, you might want to choose a web based example or one that can be accessed electronically.

This information (both worksheets) will be uploaded to the Group page in Blackboard so that all the students in the class can access it later for reference.
