  • Handel's bio
    • studied Opera in Italy
    • settled in england as a composer of Italian opera
    • English public lost interest in Italian opera
    • Handel developed the English oratorio
      • no acting
      • religious texts
      • he retained arias and recitatives
      • emphasis on chorus
  • Sonata Allegro Form
  • Exposition: establishes home key (tonic), then modulates to secondary key (often the dominant)
  • Development: section of greatest contrast through excessive modulation and thematic fragmentation
  • Recapitulation: re-establish original home key; second tonal region (previously in a secondary key in the Expo) now remains in the tonic key.

      • strophic & refrain: words change for verses/stanzas

    • CADENZA section in a concerto where the orchestra stops so that the soloist may display virtuosity

      • one page - your review/critique of the experience
      • your Bio Sketch should include information from either the "Baker's
      • Biographical Dictionary," or the "Groves Dictionary of Music" (you may supplement)
      • Include a bibiography at the end of your paper
