Special Events

Below are special events that will allow you to obtain extra credit for the class that will be applied to your final grade.  The guidelines are as follows:  a) attend the event, b) obtain a chit (ticket) that confirms that you attended the event, c) submit a typed, 2 page summary of the event (name of the event, names of participants in the event, description of the event, what you learned from the event and d) attach the chit to the paper.  Each event that you attend is worth 5 points.  You can attend up to three events during the semester.  The paper must be submitted to the instructor no later than one week after the event or it will not be accepted.  In other words, submit it to the instructor in class or submit it to the department secretary (BAL 7000) who will put the date on the paper and pass it on to the instructor.

January

January 22 - - Harold Ford, Jr., former five-term member of the House of Representatives who represented Tennessee's 9th district will deliver ODU's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lecture.  Location:  MGB auditorium.  Time:  7:30 pm.

January 24 - - ODU's Institute for Community Justice and the City of Norfolk will co-sponsor a town hall meeting about minority youth and the juvenile justice system.  Location:  BAL 1012.  Time:  9:30 am.

January 28 - - Journalist and author Juan Williams will moderate a panel about the role of the courts in "The Triumph of the Rule of Law Over Massive Resistance."  Location:  Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center (the cruise ship terminal next to Nauticus, downtown Norfolk).  Time:  7 pm.

February

February 19 - - "A New Day: Implications of the Obama Presidency," a panel discussion sponsored by ODU's Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity.  Location:  BAL 1012.  Time:  Reception at 6:30 pm and program begins at 7:15 pm.

March

March 4 - - Stephen Carmel, Senior VP for Maersk Line Ltd. will talk about "The Future of Energy and the Global Economy" sponsored by the Model UN and the Graduate Program in International Studies.  Location:  BAL 2002.  Time:  3 pm.

March 5 - - Mr. Aaron Karp, Lecturer in Political Science at ODU will talk about "The Changing Ownership of War: The Decline of States and the Rise of Insurgencies."  Location:  BAL 7009.  Time: 12:15 pm.

March 31 - - Blue Planet Forum lecture "The Impact of Hurricanes on Hampton Roads and the Nation."  Sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Nauticus, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and ODU.  Location:  Nauticus, downtown Norfolk.  Time:  6 pm light refreshments.  Program begins at 7 pm.  Note:  admission is free but seating is limited.  RSVP online at:  www.cbf.org/blueplanet/    or via e-mail at:    blueplanet@cbf.org   or by calling CBF at 622-1964. 
Note:  Since this is an off-campus event, I will award 15 points instead of the usual 5 points.

April

April 6 - - Dr. Francis Adams, ODU political scientist, will discuss the topic "Cuba and Castro."  Sponsored by the ODU Model UN Society.  Location:  BAL 9024.  Time:  3 pm.

April 7 - - A panel discussion about "Global Poverty and American Foreign Policy" with Congressman Glenn Nye.  Sponsored by ODU's Graduate Program in International Studies.  Location:  Webb Center, Portsmouth Room.  Time:  2 pm.

April 13 - - Dr. Qui Jin, ODU historian, will discuss "The U.S. and Rising Powers."  Sponsored by the ODU Model UN Society.  Location:  BAL 2002.  Time:  3 pm.

April 13 - - A panel discussion "Making Waves in Hampton Roads: Ethical Issues at the Waterfront" dealing with ethical issues involved in waterfront development.  Moderated by Cathy Lewis of WHRO Public Radio.  Location:  MGB 102.  Time:  7:30 pm.
