Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics!
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics holds a unique distinction of being the only department in the Commonwealth of Virginia to offer B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computational and Applied Mathematics. As computational mathematics, or computational science in general, plays a greater role in every branch of the science, the department offers programs which educate computational and applied mathematicians, data scientists, statisticians, biostatisticians and teachers, providing them with analytical and computational skills necessary to meet the challenges of the modern day society.
The department currently has 27 graduate faculty positions. The graduate faculty members conduct research and regularly publish their research articles in top-tier journals. The department has an active research program with ongoing grant support from NASA, NSF, EVMS, JLab, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. In the last decade, the department has consistently ranked in the top 20% nationally among all mathematics departments in the US in terms of federal R&D expenditures. The department is also supported by 19 instructional faculty members who provide quality education in our freshmen/sophomore level courses. A number of innovative teaching methods are being employed by our dedicated instructors to help students succeed.
We are excited to introduce in Fall 2017 a new major Big Data Analysis within BS in Mathematics degree. Thus the educational experience at Old Dominion University is contemporary and challenging with a strong emphasis on computational and applied mathematics, data science and statistics to current day problems.
