NOTE: As of June 2021, MOVE access is protected with two-factor authentication. More information here.
The Monarch Virtual Environment (MOVE) provides access to virtual workstations that have the same configuration as those in the standard ITS computer labs. In addition to the standard suite of software, MOVE also offers access to both departmental and ArcGIS specialized software. For a complete listing of software available in each platform see table(s) below.
How to Access MOVE
Internet browser
Use a browser for simple access or if you don't have rights to install software on your computer. Select "VMware Horizon HTML Access" at move.odu.edu.
Note: Sound and USB access are not available through the browser interface.
For the full experience, download the VMware Horizon client, which allows for sound and USB access. Select "Install VMware Horizon Client" at move.odu.edu.
Note: To avoid issues, make sure you're using version 4.0 or later.
You can access the Internet within MOVE, just as you can from any other computer, which means you can access files stored in any online storage service (Box, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.).
Use a browser to download your files from the cloud.
Edit the file.
Upload your changes back to the cloud.
(ODU employees should be mindful of restrictions on the types of University data that can be stored in the cloud. See https://itsapps.odu.edu/storage_options/ for more information.)
ODU's H: drive (your home directory)
You can access your personal H: drive from MOVE.
You'll find your H: drive on the left side of the File Explorer window.
ODU's J: and K: drives (academic and administrative shared directories)
For security reasons, J: and K: drives are not available through MOVE. We have a separate Employee Virtual Environment (EVE) for faculty and staff who need to access these drives from a virtual computer.
Log in with your MIDAS ID and password to access a general lab computer.
Computer sessions in EVE last 72 hours if you don't log out. Anything saved to the desktop will disappear at the end of your session, so make sure you save your work to an appropriate cloud or network drive.
If you do not already have a campus VPN account, find more information about requesting VPN access here.
USB drive
If you've downloaded the VMware Horizon client, you can access files from a connected USB drive. If you don't see the drive right away, you may need to check the USB Device menu from the VMware option bar at the top of the View client window.
Local drive
When you first connect to the VMware Horizon client, you have the option to share your local files. If you see a propt asking if you want to "share removable storage and local files while using remote desktops and applications," click Allow.
Software Available in MOVE
*Please Note: Access to specialized departmental software is restricted to faculty and students within those departments.
